I cannot speak highly enough of Rob’s (and his team’s) invaluable support they’ve provided for our clients. As an accountancy firm, we constantly seek to obtain good collaborations with other businesses, to meet our clients’ needs, and partnering with Rob has been a game-changer. His expertise in R&D tax legislation and claim process has consistently delivered groundbreaking results, exceeding our expectations time and time again. When one of our clients experienced a compliance check by HMRC into their R&D claim, Rob assured both our client and us that whilst it’s frustrating, it’s nothing to be concerned about, that this is how HMRC ensure the R&D scheme is utilised compliantly, and that as the due diligence had been done prior to the claim submittal, he was confident that the enquiry would be closed without issue. Rob kept us informed (along with our client who he was dealing with directly) throughout this process, and within about 3 months, he had successfully defended the enquiry in full. We have received nothing but great feedback from our clients, especially this one who had an enquiry raised into their claim, who have had R&D claims put together by Rob, and I would have no hesitation in recommending him again and again.

Owner of an Accountancy Firm

As an accountancy practice, we work with clients across multiple industries and of varying sizes across a broad scope of accounting and tax services. Whilst R&D tax relief is something we’re can do; it’s not an area of expertise as with most accountancy practices. However, since working with Rob and his team it’s enabled us to work and focus on what we’re great at, knowing that our clients can access an equally great and professional service for the nuanced area of R&D tax relief. Several of our clients are now supported by their knowledgeable and competence to great success. Even with one client having their claim enquired as part of HMRC’s Mandatory Random Enquiry Process, Rob assured our client and us that all was in hand, that they would deal with things directly, and work to a positive outcome. This was exactly what happened, with Rob closing the enquiry within only a few months, with full acceptance and no amendments. We have always been impressed with the work and diligence undertaken by Rob and his team and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to businesses or other accountants who need a team of specialist tax experts to lean on, especially if you need expertise in R&D compliance checks and enquiries!

Rob and his team have been incredibly helpful with our R&D tax claims. Working directly with Rob, he has guided us through the process, helped us articulate and flesh out the technical details, and was always available when we had questions. We successfully claimed R&D for two consecutive years before we then experienced an enquiry being opened by HMRC into our claim. We were, naturally very worried and concerned, doubting ourselves whether we were in fact eligible to make an R&D claim. What Rob was able to do was fully explain, in very simple terms, why enquiries get raised by HMRC – that they do this to make sure only companies that do qualify submit claims, and that claims aren’t submitted without the knowledge that further evidence may be required – and also allay our concerns about our eligibility. His calm, informal, yet very professional and competent approach towards us and the process meant we had every confidence in what we did was qualifiable R&D and that Rob would help prove this. Whilst it did mean we had to do additional work in terms of identifying the required evidence, Rob undertook the vast majority of this load and acted as our authorised point of contact with HMRC. After only a couple of months and two or three replied to HMRC’s questions, Rob confirmed that the enquiry was being closed, and the claim accepted. We were obviously relieved and delighted in equal measure, but mostly pleased and grateful to work put in by Rob to ensure this was as easy and stress-free as possible. We have since made further R&D claims with Rob and his team and could not recommend him enough to anyone needing friendly, professional help and guidance.

MD & Co-Founders of Gaming Software Company

Back in October 2024 we received notice from HMRC that they were going to be investigating our R&D Tax claim from 2022/23 tax year. They fired over lots of questions to us and I duly responded to all of their queries, which took several hours of my time to gather all the required records for them.

However, 6 weeks later, a few days before the Christmas break, I received another letter from them asking more questions and questioning my claim’s validity. I was quite distressed by this as I really didn’t know how to answer their questions and neither did my accountants who had originally submitted the claim for us.

I contacted Rob after being directed to him and his team by a colleague in our industry and after a full, detailed review and conversations with myself, he assured me that our claim was valid and that he would be able to help me with the enquiry, despite us not being a client or having submitted the claim with him and his team.

Rob was amazingly helpful, quickly gathered information about the claim and set about responding to HMRC on our behalf straight away. He explained everything calmly and completely alleyed my fears, which significantly reduced my stress levels!

Despite HMRC asking for more and more information over the following months, Rob managed the whole process for us. He obviously understood the R&D tax claims rules inside and out as he responded to HMRC clearly and concisely, detailing where our claim was valid and countering HMRC’s requests for information that was irrelevant to our case.

Finally in May 25 we received notification from HMRC that they would be closing the enquiry and so no tax was payable by my business.

Rob was fantastic throughout the whole process, keeping me up to date, gathering information and responding very promptly to correspondence from HMRC. I would highly recommend speaking to him if you have an R&D tax enquiry pending or are looking to submit an R&D claim in the future.

When you’re facing an HMRC R&D enquiry, results matter more than promises

These are just a few examples of the cases we’ve taken on, and won.

Claim approved in full — £250,000 retained

A technology company received an HMRC letter challenging their eligibility. After reviewing the original submission, we rebuilt the evidence file, added technical clarifications, and addressed every legislative point raised. HMRC approved the claim without amendment.

Penalty cut from 30% to 0%

A manufacturer faced a rejected claim and a 30% penalty. We proved they had taken reasonable care and acted on qualified professional advice. HMRC agreed to remove the penalty entirely, saving the client tens of thousands of pounds.

Enquiry closed in 6 weeks

An engineering firm was midway through an enquiry that had already dragged on for months. We took over, supplied all evidence HMRC was likely to request, and requested a video meeting to clarify technical details. The caseworker closed the file within six weeks.

Appeal overturned rejection

A client’s claim was rejected after two rounds of correspondence. We escalated to HMRC’s Solicitors & Legal Services team, demonstrating legislative misapplication. The claim was approved in full at appeal.
